Celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and International Women’s Day 2026

“Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated.”

Quote from International Women’s Day 2026 #IWD2026 #GiveToGain

Last month marked International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and this month we mark International Women’s Day; an important moment to recognise the dedication, and impact of women and girls who shape our world every day, through science and beyond. It is a day not only to celebrate achievements, but also to highlight the importance of creating an inclusive and equitable scientific and STEM community.

Across the world, women continue to drive discovery, challenge assumptions, and expand our understanding of complex scientific fields. Their contributions in research, innovation, communication, and application, often transforming the way science improves lives and supports society. From pioneering breakthroughs to the steady, meticulous work that underpins progress, women remain essential to the advancement of science.

At ECHA Microbiology, we took this opportunity to recognise the talented scientific minds within our own team. With backgrounds spanning PhD-level research, biochemistry, microbiology, and the wider life sciences, these women bring a depth of expertise and a strong scientific foundation to everything they do. Their training shapes not only their knowledge, but also the way they think, encouraging precision, and a commitment to finding solutions.

Moments like International Day of Women and Girls in Science and International Women’s Day remind us why representation matters. Seeing women thrive in scientific spaces helps inspire the next generation, showing girls and young women that science is not only accessible, but full of opportunity. Encouragement, visibility, and support play a vital role in building confidence and opening doors for future innovators.

While progress continues, there is still more to be done. Creating inclusive environments, supporting career development, and celebrating achievements both big and small are all part of fostering lasting change, and are always evident here at ECHA.

As we reflect on the day, we celebrate our colleagues contributing to science today, and those who will shape it tomorrow. Their curiosity fuels discovery, their knowledge expands understanding, and their commitment advances science.
