Microbially accelerated corrosion is a well documented phenomenon and has affected the marine industry spasmodically. It is believed to have been accelerated by the proliferation of micro-organisms, particularly sulphate reducing bacteria. The microbes involved and the corrosion mechanisms will be discussed in this article including a number of strategies for monitoring, remediation and avoidance.
