Product FAQs
For SigTests® Sig Sulphide®
-
What is the test used for?
The Sig Sulphide® test is used to detect the presence of microorganisms that can generate corrosive sulphide, e.g. Sulphide Generating Bacteria (SGB) including Sulphate Reducing Bacteria (SRB).
-
Can the Sig Sulphide® test be used for on-site testing?
Yes, the Sig Sulphide® SRB test kit provides a quick and user-friendly method that can be used on-site without the need for specialised training or equipment. This capability helps in avoiding delays associated with transferring samples to a laboratory, providing quicker results and cost savings.
-
What pack sizes are available?
The Sig Sulphide® test is sold in packs of 10 tests. If you require a larger pack size for your application please let us know.
-
What is the shelf life of the test?
The Sig Sulphide® test is manufactured with 1 years Shelf-life from date of production. We normally supply tests with at least 8 months remaining, please let us know at the time of your order if you require a longer Shelf-life and we will do our best to accommodate you. The Expiry date of the product is printed on the batch label of the tests.
-
What are the storage requirements of the test?
The test can be stored for the duration of its shelf life at ambient temperature (in a range of about 2-25°C). Do not store frozen. If the appearance of the test has not changed after prolonged storage it should still be suitable for use even after it has exceeded its expiry date.
-
What does a positive result look like?
A positive result is identified by a black line at the interface after incubation. The speed at which this line spreads downward into the gel indicates the severity of sulphate reducing bacteria contamination.
-
What is the HS code of the Sig Sulphide® Test?
The Harmonized System (HS) is a standardized numerical method of classifying traded products. The HS assigns specific six-digit codes for varying classifications and commodities. Countries are allowed to add longer codes to the first six digits for further classification. It is used by countries around the world to uniformly identify and describe products for purposes such as assessing duties and gathering statistics.
The Sig Sulphide® test is classified as: Prepared culture media for the development or maintenance of micro-organisms HS code for export from UK: 38.21.00.00 and HS code for import into the UK 38.21.00.00.00.

How quickly can I get a result with the Sig Sulphide® test?
The test will only take a few minutes to conduct, you should then incubate the test, and examine daily if possible. Whilst the test takes up to 6 days for a complete result it is possible for heavy SGB contaminated samples to produce a result overnight. A positive result will not get less with continued incubation so once a heavy SGB contamination has been detected you can act on that information immediately without waiting the full 6 days.
